A minibus for disabled children in Dakar

Going to school in Senegal often starts with a long walk. And for disabled children, this is out of the question. On 14 November, Renault Trucks and Michelin therefore joined forces to present a Master Minibus to the Solidarité Laïque Association to pick up schoolchildren for the Estel de Ouakam centre, one of the few educational institutions that caters for mentally handicapped children in the Dakar region.

The Estel de Ouakam School is one of the few educational centres specialized in catering for children suffering from mental deficiency in Senegal. And the 50 children who regularly attend it sometimes have to travel long distances to get there.
Following on from the various causes that the manufacturer or its staff have been supporting for several years in favour of children all around the world, Renault Trucks and Michelin presented a Renault Master minibus to the Estel school. Every day, this Master will travel more than 240 km to enable as many children as possible to learn in an environment adapted to their differences and learning needs, in a country where disability is still a taboo subject.

Keys to the minibus were officially handed over on 14 November 2011 at the Renault Trucks Gonesse site at a ceremony attended by representatives of Renault Trucks and the Solidarité Laïque Association, the Estel school's partner in France. The Master minibus will then be loaded with educational materials before setting off for Ouakam to start its noble mission without delay.

Renault Trucks dealer SERA Senegal will look after some of the vehicle's maintenance, so that the Estel school can devote its funds and time to what really matters: giving its pupils every chance by helping them learn and develop with the ultimate aim of finding their place in society.
