Supply innovations: the first vehicule to combine hybridisation and indirect cyrogenic refrigeration

The Casino Group has joined forces with Renault Trucks, Air Liquide, Chereau and STAF to develop the first hybrid vehicle in the world featuring cryogenic refrigeration and the Piek* label. Although the idea of replacing the Diesel powered refrigeration unit by a system based on liquid nitrogen may not be new, it is the "indirect" exchanger combined with hybrid energy that demonstrates such technological prowess and is a world first. A pioneer in responsible urban deliveries, the CASINO Group demonstrates all the relevance of its "Citygreen" strategy by converting limitations and issues into genuine opportunities to build a more respectful and united society. Furthermore, by working together and contributing to this world first in France, these five companies have clearly demonstrated that the country still has a genuine potential for innovation in the highly competitive international marketplace.

On 8 March, M. Dominique POLLIEN, General Manager of Renault Trucks France, M. Jean-Luc GAYDAN, General Manager of Air Liquide France Industrie and M. Alain GUERMEUR, President of Chereau, presented the keys for the world's first vehicle combining hybrid propulsion with indirect dispersion nitrogen refrigeration and complying with Piek* label requirements, to M. Kara MENDJEL, President and CEO of STAF transports. The meeting was also attended by Mme Julie BADICHE, Goods Flow planning director and M. Rémi AUZANNEAU, General Manager for Logistics in France, representing the Casino Group, the project’s initiator.
Associating these technologies with the Piek label makes it possible to achieve unprecedented levels of antipollution performance in several areas:
•    The hybrid propulsion delivers fuel consumption savings which can be as high as 20%,  
•    The cryogenic refrigeration reduces CO2 emissions by 15 t per year and per vehicle,  
•    Compliance with Piek label requirements for the refrigerated body guarantees sound levels of below 60 dB at 7 m, the equivalent of a normal conversation between two people.  

Other advantages are expected:
•    Using an indirect exchange for the refrigeration provides optimal user safety for the driver and is simple to use,
•    The cold chain can be preserved more easily due to the faster drop in temperature,  
•    The significant reduction in atmospheric and sound pollution contributes to improving the image of urban logistics.  
* The Piek label certifies equipment emitting lower sound levels suitable for night time deliveries in urban environments. The independent Cemafroid centre of expertise for the cold chain is the organisation qualified to authorise use of the PIEK brand, a label inspired by our Dutch neighbours, which certifies the limitation of sound produced by equipment during deliveries at night.
Finally, this new vehicle opens up the possibility of carrying out deliveries at night, which will result in several advantages for city dwellers: less traffic congestion, daytime availability of parking spaces used for deliveries and less stress, particularly for drivers.  

The Casino Group has undertaken to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25% between now and 2020. To achieve this, the Group is introducing several innovative measures, particularly with regard to the logistics for its town centre stores, by developing a system of quiet and clean deliveries. After assessing the various technologies available on the market (ethanol-based propulsion, etc.), the Casino Group is now going further by bringing together different French companies to play a part in its "2012 urban penetration project", with each one of them contributing its own particular expertise in the field of goods transport.
The principle of hybridisation developed by Renault Trucks is simple: the kinetic energy generated by the vehicle is recovered during braking and deceleration phases and converted into electricity. This energy is then stored in the traction batteries which are able to operate perfectly independently, without needing recharging. It is then used to power the electric motor. The vehicle starts up in electric mode until it reaches a speed of around 20 km/h an hour, at which point the Diesel engine takes over. This means that the Diesel engine is only used during phases when it consumes the least, i.e. not during the start-up phase.
Apart from the considerable reduction in consumption (up to 20% made possible by using the all- electric mode), Renault Trucks' hybrid technology also reduces noise for those in the vicinity.

Air Liquide contributes its expertise in the field of industrial gases and cryogenics, offering an innovation in cryogenic refrigeration.
The technology combines the performance of cryogenic refrigeration with the security offered by a mechanical refrigeration unit:
•    efficient and accurate temperature control,
•    silence,
•    absence of CO2 and particle emissions,
•    flexibility of logistics,
•    competitivity.
The innovation lies in creating the refrigeration by passing air from the vehicle’s refrigerated compartment through an exchanger supplied with liquid nitrogen.
The comprehensive and integrated blueeze solution is simple to implement and use. It consists of the on-board refrigeration equipment, the liquid nitrogen dispensing station and associated services.
With this innovation, Air Liquide brings sustainable improvement to all those involved in controlled temperature transport (mass retailing, hauliers and drivers).

Chereau has produced a genuine urban distribution vehicle based on a hybrid rigid chassis and a cryogenic refrigerating system.   

With these innovations, Chereau is firmly asserting its determination to develop ranges of vehicles capable of satisfying the specific requirements of transport activities. This is in line with the consistently innovative approach it has been following over the last 60 years, always with the aim of offering goods transport under optimal safety conditions to the market and meeting the demands of hauliers and carriers as well as the general public.
Chereau's characteristic innovation can be found in this vehicle's components:
•   Independent electricity supply for the refrigeration,
•   Electrically powered sliding insulated opening,  
•   Air curtain to maintain the low temperature inside the body during unloading,  
•   Insulated modular internal separation,
•   LED rear side warning lights to protect road users and the driver in the unloading area,  
•   Intelligent rearview vision from the cab.

Characteristics which make this vehicle the best logistics solution for supplying sales outlets while at the same time significantly reducing the nuisance caused to city dwellers.  

STAF is strengthening its position as a pioneering haulier in the fields of environmental protection and health.  
Together with its customers in the mass retail sector, it has launched a new series of unique initiatives in road haulage, aiming to significantly reduce the impact of its activity on the environment and public health by virtually eliminating all CO2, nitrous oxide and particle emissions. It has also been working to cut sound levels to which the inhabitants of major conurbations such as Paris and its suburbs are particularly sensitive.

This has led to simultaneous investments in the two most important clean engine technologies currently being developed by the largest engine manufacturers, currently still in their launch phase, which will allow the deployment of:  
o    clean vehicles running on Ethanol, made from grape pomace and seed tannins: the use of a non-fossil energy reducing CO2 emissions by 75%  
o    Diesel/electric hybrid vehicles for carrying heavy loads: reduces pollution and allows vehicles to operate noiselessly during night time deliveries in urban centres.  

The initiative led by these five partner companies to make this project a reality generates value in more ways than one.  
First of all, it demonstrates French industry's potential for innovation and the advantages France has on the international stage in the fields of industry and services. Secondly, the virtuous approach of this initiative advances the ecological cause by significantly reducing logistics’ footprint. This contribution to preserving the environment will unquestionably benefit future generations. Finally, it marks a genuine step forward by establishing an alternative model of urban distribution that is more realistic, better thought out and more respectful of the general public.
