Safety

The increase in traffic on certain major routes and on the outskirts of urban areas contributes to making roads less safe. When appraisals are being made, it is easy to put all the blame on trucks. Accused of every possible misdeed, they are stigmatised together with the entire road haulage sector, in ignorance of the actual facts revealed by statistics.

Renault Trucks has made safety one of its top priorities. Its operations in this field are guided by a determination to find the most efficient solutions.

Safety involves a number of points such as:

  • improved road holding, braking, slowing, vision and ergonomics
  • the development of anti-run guards
  • improvement in automatic systems taking over control of the vehicle to help the driver in risk situations
  • the fight against loss of vigilance
  • protection of the driver and other cab occupants
  • protection of the vulnerable users.

Renault Trucks leads different actions to raise public awareness about the importance of sharing peacefully the highway

From the heavy goods vehicle to the intelligent truck

Today, electronic control braking system technologies (EBS) mean optimal reactivity. Dynamic control enhances truck handling, and prevents over-turning and, in the case of articulated vehicles, jack-knifing.

In the future, rear-view mirrors with integrated cameras and sensors and cameras to cut out blind spots will help the driver to maintain maximum vigilance.
Finally, devices allowing better interactivity between the driver and his vehicle are still available:

  • adaptive cruise-control (ACC), which will ensure sufficient safety distances between vehicles
  • Lane Keeping, which will enhance handling.

Passive safety is also an issue, and comfort and cab design (elimination of blunt forms, air bags, seat belts, reinforced cab structure…) are also permanently under scrutiny to minimise the seriousness of any accidents that do happen.
