FIDEUS: Renault Trucks and Condis experiment with night deliveries in Barcelona

With the completion of the day deliveries phase, the experimental Renault Midlum developed by Renault Trucks as part of the European research programme  FIDEUS (Freight Intelligent Delivery in European Urban Spaces) has started on night deliveries in Barcelona. The truck, with its enhanced environmental performance, has been entrusted to Condis, one of Spain’s biggest supermarket chains, and is currently being tested for a period of 3 weeks in the streets of Barcelona.

The first trial carried out in Lyon in January 2008 demonstrated the environmental efficiency of the Renault Trucks vehicle for daytime urban deliveries: 4 times less noisy than other delivery vehicles… twice the objective fixed by the Renault Trucks project team!

The main objective of this trial phase in Barcelona is to measure the vehicle’s sound impact in an even quieter nocturnal environment. In order to do this, the vehicle has been configured in “Low-Noise” mode, with additional work done to the van’s floor, tailgate and cab door linings.

In terms of efficiency and safety, the Barcelona trials will also be an opportunity to implement and test RFID technology (Radio Frequency IDentification) used for parcel tracking. In order to improve the vehicle’s visibility at night, a new fairing with integrated LEDs has been fitted to the vehicle.

At the end of these trials, all the data gathered during the two campaigns will be collected and analysed with a view to an official presentation of the results of the FIDEUS project at the Trans-Research Arena scientific congress (TRA) which will take place in Ljubljana (Slovenia) from April 21st to 25th 2008.
